Put Me in the Zoo! December 28, 2012

Grammy and Grandpa's visit meant two whole weeks with more adults in the house than children. We took full advantage, running our errands, seeing our movies, and taking the kids on dates one by one. We also enjoyed a day trip to the Brevard Zoo.

When we attended the zoo six months ago, we hit the giraffe exhibit too late in the afternoon.  Most of the African animals were taking their afternoon naps. Someone told us to come earlier in the day to catch the more more interesting animals in their active time of day.

This time did not disappoint.

The savannah features a built-up area where tourists can feed the giraffes a carrot.  Devon quivered his delight as one snaked out a long tongue to take his offering.

We also enjoyed feeding the deer.

Devon enjoyed seeing people on the ropes course climb posts. scale bridges, and zip-line over the alligator swamp.  Grandpa has promised to do that with him when he gets big enough.

Right?

Anything with animals AND a train is perfection for Devon.

He talked so much and so loudly I wonder how much of the guided tour the other passengers could hear.

The bird exhibit made everyone shy.

One of the animals followed us home, due to the clever old "exit through the gift shop" standby.  Devon squirmed down my leg and bolted away from me, throwing his arms around the neck of a stuffed giraffe.

"He's byoo-tifullll!" he exclaimed, eyes bright and expectant.

Pause for emphasis.

"Can I take him home?"

Yep.

Devon enjoys brushing his giraffe like one of the animals in the petting zoo.  He asks for my hairbrush, puts a few long, comforting strokes on the giraffe's back, and then combs his own hair for good measure.

As it turns out, Raffy the Giraffy has become a valuable member of the family.  He's doing all he can to get our reluctant napper to rest a bit in the late afternoons.  One day we found Devon like this, pinned to the bed by a hoof.

Great job, Raffy!  You deserve a carrot!
